Light a Candle
My dad was born in Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas in August of 1919. He was the son of Lyster Lafayette "Jack" Conditt and Josephine Margaret Enser, and was an only child.
My dad enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942. He had been in the CCC previously and had worked across the country doing whatever he was instructed to do. When the war started, he decided to join the Navy.
He was assigned to the Astoria and stayed there until the ship was sunk during the Battle of Savo Island August 8-9, 1942. He stayed in the water for some time until he and others were rescued.
He then went to the Cruiser Santa Fe and stayed there
